Live Shadow: A Virtual BESS Validation Framework Before CAPEX Commitment

Live Shadow validates BESS sizing, peak-shaving strategy and expected operational behaviour using real site data before physical deployment — a virtual battery running EWISER's EDM engine on live metering, so customers and EPC partners see the maximum-demand saving proven before they buy any hardware.

Executive summary

Commercial and industrial (C&I) BESS projects require significant capital investment, while their economic performance depends on site-specific factors including demand behaviour, battery configuration and dispatch strategy.

EWISER Live Shadow provides a pre-deployment validation framework that creates a virtual BESS environment before physical installation. By using real site demand data and applying EWISER Energy Decision Management (EDM) logic without dispatching physical hardware, Live Shadow lets customers and EPC partners evaluate expected peak-shaving behaviour, battery utilisation and system performance.

The challenge: reducing uncertainty before BESS investment

Before committing CAPEX, customers and EPC partners need confidence that the proposed BESS configuration and control strategy can achieve the expected outcome. Conventional approaches rely on limited historical snapshots or theoretical assumptions, creating uncertainty in BESS sizing (insufficient or excessive power and energy), in peak-shaving performance (whether demand-reduction targets can actually be met), and in control-strategy behaviour (how the EMS responds under real operating conditions).

Live Shadow concept: virtual BESS before physical deployment

Live Shadow acts as a digital validation layer between BESS design and physical deployment. Instead of immediately installing and operating a battery, a virtual BESS is configured and evaluated using real customer demand behaviour.

The flow is: real site data, captured by EWISER Edge data acquisition, feeds a virtual BESS configuration, which is run through EDM shadow simulation to produce a performance assessment — all before any hardware is bought.

System architecture and data acquisition

EWISER Edge provides the data foundation for Live Shadow by collecting site-level energy information and enabling continuous analysis of actual operating conditions: real-time demand data acquisition, site monitoring and communication interface, and data transmission for the virtual BESS simulation.

Virtual BESS and EDM shadow simulation

After collecting real site demand information, Live Shadow applies a configured virtual BESS model and executes the EDM control strategy without sending commands to physical battery hardware.

The simulation evaluates expected battery dispatch behaviour, virtual state-of-charge (SOC) evolution, net grid demand after virtual BESS operation, and potential peak-shaving capability.

Live Shadow dashboard: performance visibility

The dashboard makes the relationship between site demand and virtual BESS behaviour visible: the actual site demand profile, the virtual BESS dispatch response, net grid demand after simulated operation, virtual SOC utilisation, and performance-assessment indicators.

Validation capabilities

Live Shadow supports three validation objectives. BESS sizing validation evaluates whether the selected power and energy capacity suits the site demand profile. Control-strategy validation assesses how the EDM strategy manages dispatch and energy availability under actual conditions. Investment-confidence validation provides evidence-based insight before the final deployment decision.

Business value

By introducing a validation layer before physical deployment, Live Shadow helps customers and EPC partners reduce uncertainty, improve system-design confidence, and make more informed BESS investment decisions — proving the maximum-demand saving on real operation rather than a one-off study. It is running today at InverPower in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Frequently asked questions

What is Live Shadow?

Live Shadow is EWISER's prove-before-you-buy service: a virtual battery mirrored on a site's real load and dispatched by the same EDM engine a physical system would use, so sizing and maximum-demand savings are validated on live data before any hardware is purchased.

How is it different from a feasibility study?

A study is a one-off estimate on historical assumptions. Live Shadow runs continuously on the site's real, live metering with the actual dispatch engine, so it measures the would-be saving on real operation rather than projecting it.

What hardware does it need?

An EWISER Edge device at the site's power meter to acquire real-time demand data. No battery is installed — the BESS is virtual until the business case is proven.

Is Live Shadow proven in the field?

Yes — it is running live at InverPower's office in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, validating TNB Maximum Demand shaving before hardware commitment.
